Teaching Requirements

Training begins in June and ends in May, with no exceptions. All training and practicum hours occur at the Neil and Willa Jean Smalley Children’s Dyslexia Center. Attendance at all scheduled lecture and practicum hours is mandatory. Scholars must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and proof of this degree is required. A concern for children struggling with literacy is expected as well.

Time Commitment

  • First five sessions: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
  • Remaining 30 hours of seminar: 3-4 hours every 3rd or 4th Saturday thru February


  • Two students twice a week, M/W or T/TH, during the school year term; 12 sessions in summer term


  • Practical midterm and final: one or two in class quizzes
  • 4 Book reports and other assignments
  • Mastery of  the structure of the English Language
  • Lesson planning and record keeping

  1. Initial Level Training Scholar Application
  2.  Proof of completion of Bachelor’s Degree (transcript or certificate)
  3.   Two letters of recommendation from professionals in the field
